Support the Homies

Ever since Nathan Gifford took on some help in his successful bacon production business at Gifford’s Bacon, he’s had a little time on his hands. He’s filled some of that time with fun pop-up dinners at his headquarters location at 1109 Straightway Ave. in East Nashville, and he’s spent a little more effort developing prepared foods like ribs and sausages to sell out of his shop.

But Gifford also feels the need to give back to his community, so he’s partnered with Alex Chont, the founder of David's Den, a nonprofit formed to provide aid to musicians and local creatives who struggle with depression, suicidal thoughts and other mental health matters. Together the duo has formed a new nonprofit called Support the Homies to work closely with the MNPS H.E.R.O. program to support the underserved students in our community.

I know that seems like a lot of nonprofits and layers, but this is a new initiative for Gifford, and he’s committed to making an impact with local youth. To that end, he has planned the first-ever Support the Homies Family Potluck for tomorrow, Nov. 11, from noon until 4 p.m. at the bacon shop, because who doesn’t love a potluck?!

Bring your favorite dish to share (casseroles encouraged), and commit to donating $10 per dish for the chance to show off your kitchen skills to the assembled diners so Support the Homies can start to help out the nearly 4,000 Nashville students who participate in the H.E.R.O. program as they navigate unstable housing each year.

Cash is always king, and you can make your donation in person at the event, but you can also make it online through the organization's donation page. Best of all, you can help out by bringing a dish tomorrow and enjoying some fellowship as you learn about Gifford’s and Chont’s efforts.
