With so many things (literally) on our plate to think about on a daily basis, it can be difficult to wrap our brains around the potentially existential problems within the global food system. Concerns include the rampant population growth that takes up available arable lands and creates more mouths to feed; harmful agricultural practices that sap the soil of its natural nutrients; and GMO efforts to change the DNA of what we eat.
The award-winning documentary Feeding Tomorrow addresses those hard issues and actually proposes some solutions through the mouths of passionate experts in the field of food policy. Several local groups have come together to sponsor a screening of the important film on Monday, Jan. 22, at The Blue Room Bar, part of Jack White’s Third Man Records complex at 623 Seventh Ave. S.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. with local food, drinks and music followed by a screening of the doc at 7. After the movie is over, a panel of Middle Tennessee food advocates will sit for a panel discussion to add local context to the film. Panelists include Asher Wright, the farm director at Caney Fork Farm; Rebecah Boynton, director of Nashville Community Farmers Markets and founder of Tennessee Food & Farming Alliance; Sandy Scheele, the supervisor of nutrition for Murfreesboro City Schools; John Patrick, founder of Burns Village & Farm; Hanes Motsinger of Feed Back Nashville and Nashville Food Project; and Stephanie Roach of the Nashville Food Waste Initiative at Urban Green Lab.
