Recently closed and beloved Elliston Place watering hole The Corner Bar will reopen by late July in a building located near Geodis Park.
The future business will be called Corner Bar South and replace its sister business, which closed its Rock Block location in late March after a 20-plus-year run.
Corner Bar South will be located at 2190 Nolensville Pike in a building that houses cafe Red Bicycle Coffee and Crepes, among other business.
The Rock Block pub will cease operations as redevelopment of site planned
Merdan Mohammed will own and operate Corner Bar South, which he says will offer a vibe “99.9 percent” similar to that of The Corner Bar.
Relatedly, Torre Wyatt, who served as manager of the Elliston Place Corner Bar for about 20 years, will manage Corner Bar South.
Mohammed says he will start operations with about 10 employees, many of whom worked at the previous location. The new space offers about 4,500 square feet. Corner Bar South will take the space last home to South Side Pizza Kitchen and Pub.
The Corner Bar closed in part due to a project Nashville-based development company Giarratana has planned for the site. To include a residential tower and parking garage, the redevelopment of the site will require the eventual razing of the building at 2200 Elliston Place in which The Corner Bar operated.
Mixed-use building would replace Elliston Place structure housing Corner Bar
Opened in 2004, The Corner Bar served as one of the only dive bars operational in the general Midtown area and was the lone such business when it closed on the city’s Rock Block. It was open 365 days a year from 3 p.m. to 3 a.m.
Old-school bars that once operated near the former Corner Bar site and that have closed since the 1990s include The Gold Rush, Hurry Back and South Street.
As planned, the main Giarratana building will rise 17 floors and offer a combination of 356 apartment units and ground-level retail and restaurant space. In addition, Giarratana is eyeing a five-story (with two levels below grade) 578-space parking garage, to supplement the tower, for an adjacent property located at 209 22nd Ave. N.
