When the weather is as hot as it has been for the past month, and you don’t have access to your own pool, hotel pools and rooftop bars become very attractive places to hang out. Now that The Dive Motel has apparently given up the ghost and never reopened after their seasonal closure, it’s time to look for new options.
There’s one coming up soon at one of my favorite new rooftop bars, Butterfly at W Nashville. It’s a José Andrés joint, so I was already predisposed to like it before my first visit. It’s got a very cool vibe and the breeze flows from both sides of the building to provide some nice natural air conditioning.
As a bonus, you don’t have to be a guest at the W to patronize Butterfly, and they’re throwing a special event on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. to celebrate National Rum Day. They're teaming up with Sonrisa Puerto Rican Rum to offer a few special rum cocktails on the menu that evening.
Try a "Golden Hour Reserva" (smoked Old Fashioned), an "Island Smile Daiquiri" (honeydew daiquiri), the "Pineapple Presidente" (a riff on el presidente) or a "Papaya Paradise" (papaya colada). Chef-curated light bites will be available for purchase, including ahi tuna-coconut ceviche with fried plantain chips, empanadas, flautas de carnitas and tres leches with seasonal fruit.
The evening will also feature a traditional Puerto Rican piragua shaved ice cart featuring mojito and spicy passionfruit flavors torqued up with Sonrisa Platino, plus non-alcoholic fruity flavors like coconut, watermelon, blue raspberry and blood orange. There will also be live DJ sets and they'll be handing out Sonrisa Rum swag.
There’s no cover charge to attend, and you don’t even have to make reservations. Just head to the W at 300 12th Ave. S. and make your way to the 13th floor. That’s where you’ll find the party. Stay cool!
