Brave New Works Lab
OZ Arts Nashville is widely known for hosting world-class artists. This season alone, the contemporary arts center has welcomed performances from France, Chile, Spain, Japan and South Africa. But with the return of its annual Brave New Works Lab, OZ shifts its focus, opening the door to some of Middle Tennessee’s most daring artists. It’s a fantastic program that encourages “multimedia experimentation and collaboration across disciplines.” This year’s lineup features a really exciting blend of fresh contemporary dance and performance art. First up, Eboné Amos (in collaboration with musician Alex Dolezal and singer O’Neal Black) will examine Black radical imagination through two very different forms — traditional spirituals and Afro-contemporary movement. Lenin Fernandez also has created a large-group dance piece that “utilizes the imagery of water as a tool for exploring aging, grief and memory.” Jennie Liu and Andrew Gilbert will make their Nashville debut with “an electro-futuristic chamber operetta,” featuring indie darling Hannah Dorfman. And local dance favorite Amanda Reichert teams up with playwright Emmalee Manes to create a cheeky new dance-theater work that “explores the complex interior of an author’s imagination.”
