I don’t have the word count to explain why I became fixated on Howard Stern last year, or why I spent weeks of my one wild and precious life reading his seminal 1993 memoir Private Parts. The book is terrible. Do not read it. What you should do instead is watch the movie adaptation they made out of the only good parts of the book — the parts where he’s learning how to be a disc jockey, going from city to city and station to station, fighting with his bosses and ultimately becoming the radio behemoth he became. If you ignore some of the more problematic parts of his comedy, you can almost be inspired. If you’re someone who enjoys ’90s pop culture or would like to see Paul Giamatti in the role of a lifetime as someone called “Pig Vomit,” or if you just wonder if there’s someone you can blame for how many men have podcasts, this is the movie for you. Bonus points if you notice all the celebrity cameos. Edie Falco was a real surprise.
