Lauren Gunderson has been widely recognized as one of the nation’s most produced playwrights, and she’s celebrated for clever, fast-paced works like Silent Sky, The Revolutionists and The Book of Will. You can check out her latest project this weekend as Nashville Rep’s Ingram New Works Project presents the first public reading of Pride & Prejudice: An Ardent New Musical. Billed as “a sexy, sweeping, theatrical explosion of yearning, wit and romantic defiance,” this new adaptation features a book by Gunderson, with music and lyrics by Kira Stone — a versatile artist known for pushing the boundaries of pop music with more theatrical storytelling. Directed by Sarah Rasmussen (an award-winning director, and artistic director at the McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton, N.J.), the cast features both Broadway and local talent — including Gabrielle Carrubba (Just in Time; Dear Evan Hansen) and Will Blum (Beetlejuice; School of Rock), along with Katie Boeck, Geoffrey Davin, Jennifer Whitcomb-Oliva, Haley Putnam, Aleia Eagleton and Harrison Hall. It’s an exciting opportunity for local audiences to explore the process of bringing new works to life, while experiencing Jane Austen’s timeless tale in a whole new way.
