With its stunning designs and localized approach to storytelling, it’s no wonder Nashville’s Nutcracker has become such a beloved holiday tradition. Featuring story adaptation, choreography and direction by Paul Vasterling, it’s a uniquely appealing work brought to life with accompaniment by the Nashville Symphony. First presented by Nashville Ballet in 2008, the piece sets the classic tale against the backdrop of the 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition, infusing young Clara’s holiday dreams with iconic figures and local landmarks — from a wintry Shelby Bottoms to a glittering Parthenon Garden. Audiences can look forward to Shigeru Yaji’s imaginative scenery and Campbell Baird’s exquisite costumes. Of course, the dancing itself is the real draw, and as always, Nashville Ballet delivers a magical performance — from the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier right down to the delightful youth cast of mice, soldiers, lambs and bonbons. Whether it’s a favorite annual tradition or your very first introduction to the ballet, Nashville’s Nutcracker is sure to boost your family’s holiday spirit.
