The Matrix

At risk of revealing how gigantic a nerd I am, I used to reenact The Matrix in my backyard with Nerf and water guns as a child. The movie completely rewired my brain (in a good way … not in the too-online red-pilled way), and using toys to reconstruct the legendary lobby shootout was the only way I could process it as a first-grader. The Wachowski sisters’ mega-blend of kung fu, anime, cyberpunk, Hong Kong heroic bloodshed, gender dysphoria, Alice in Wonderland, stoner philosophy and the base principles of half a dozen religions scrambled a lot more eggs than just mine. And it still feels like the future on every subsequent rewatch, no matter how many years it’s been. If you get the chance to see it on the big screen this time around, make sure to pay extra close attention to the opening chase sequence, when Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) is fleeing the agents across rooftops. If you look in the background of the otherwise Australia-shot opening scene, you’ll see a familiar Batman-esque skyscraper. Just remember to take your pills beforehand.
