Sometime in the past few years, the worm from Labyrinth became a meme. Dispensing cockney aphorisms and unforgettable lines like “Who, me? Nah, I’m just a worm,” his two-minute cameo has been fodder for DIYs, unhinged makeup looks and even fancams. It might seem unusual for a minor character to ascend to fan-favorite status more than four decades on — but that’s par for the course in Jim Henson’s cult-classic puppetry canon. Expertly crafted and lovably performed, even Henson’s bit characters take on lives of their own, and alongside The Worm (or “William,” to friends) Labyrinth is full of them. Of course, there’s also the leading humans: Jennifer Connelly, who plays the stubborn, imaginative teen Sarah Williams, and David Bowie, who as the Goblin King Jareth is a walking queer awakening in tights. Now through Jan. 11, Labyrinth celebrates its 40th anniversary at Regal Cinemas across the country. Come to sing along to classics like “Magic Dance” and “As the World Falls Down.” Stay for a nice cup of tea. Visit fathomentertainment.com for showtimes.
