Venezuela-born comedian Angelo Colina has been making waves on social media with his Spanish-language stand-up sets, full of playful and familiar observations on the immigrant experience and how different Latin American groups navigate life together in the U.S. and abroad. Like any good storyteller, he draws in the audience as though they already know they’re in on the joke, whether he’s talking about getting his dog from Venezuela to Colombia to the U.S. or his various odes to his Dominican barber.
The New York-based comedian’s sets have also taken on a bigger symbolism than riffs on assimilation. As he told theLos Angeles Times, there’s something punk about performing in his native language while ICE runs amok, but there’s also a sadness as audience members miss shows over safety concerns. As Nashville’s Spanish-speaking population grows and contends with increased numbers of la migra prowling the streets and stalking courtrooms, let’s hope the comedian gets the warm welcome he deserves and his fans get some much-needed laughter.
