As an accountant and nonprofit leader with groups like the American Muslim Advisory Council and the National Women’s Political Caucus, Zulfat Suara was familiar to many people working on the ground in Nashville politics. Many more Nashvillians know her now. After the results were tallied in the Aug. 1 election, Suara was the second-place vote-getter in the Metro Council at-large race. In last month’s runoff, she secured the last of four at-large spots still up for grabs, making her candidacy one of the best stories of the election cycle. An immigrant from Nigeria, she becomes the first Muslim elected to the Metro Council in Nashville’s history. STEVEN HALE
