The Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition is necessarily political. But it wasn’t until 2018 that the Nashville-based group fully dipped its toes into the nitty-gritty of electoral politics. They formed a political action committee, TIRRC Votes, in order to influence local and state elections, and in 2019 they entered the Metro fray for the first time. A mass-canvassing and advertising effort supported their ultimate success: Of 25 endorsements in Metro races this cycle, 21 of their candidates won. STEPHEN ELLIOTT
