Best School Board Member

Sometimes the best thing a person can do is to back away from a bad situation, and that’s why we’re awarding Mary Pierce this Best of Nashville award. That might sound like a pot shot, but it’s not. Pierce often engaged in debate in a respectful manner, and often advocated in areas other board members wouldn’t. The Metro Nashville Board of Education hasn’t gotten any better at solving problems this past year, and it seems Pierce decided she’d had enough. (She opted not to run in this year’s school board race in her district.) Pierce says she’ll keep pushing for solutions outside the board room, and we hope she does. AMANDA HAGGARD
