Where to Stream the Films Reviewed in People Only Die of Love in Movies

Scene editor Jim Ridley died four years ago today. Ridley, who worked at the paper for a quarter-century and served as its chief editor for the better part of a decade, was a peerless film critic. Former Scene staffer Steve Haruch collected Ridley’s film writing in the book People Only Die of Love in Movies: Film Writing by Jim Ridley, which was published by Vanderbilt University Press in 2018.

The volume includes reviews of movies Ridley admired, like Eyes Wide Shut (an “orgy’s parade of artfully arranged fornicators”), Thelma & Louise (“a buzzing skyrocket of a movie”), Once Upon a Time in the West (“voluptuous and perverse”) and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (“an exaltation of life’s bittersweet balances and trade-offs — of unexpected triumphs made richer by the dashed hopes that offset them.”)

We received a lovely surprise today to commemorate Ridley’s life and boost our spirits during the strange and lonely time sheltering in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. Toby Leonard, the programming director at The Belcourt Theatre, put together an exhaustive list of where to stream every available movie that’s collected in Haruch’s book. Leonard included a note: “Do with it what you will.” So we’re sharing it with you. If you don’t own the book yet, you can order it from Vanderbilt University Press. 

In the lede of his 1999 review of Kore-eda Hirokazu’s After Life, Ridley writes: “In my dreams, heaven is a movie theater. Not a video shop of endless aisles, not a megaplex with an embarrassment of riches; just a simple one-screener with a different movie every couple of nights.” Here’s to your one-screener in the most intimate theater, and to Jim Ridley.
