Longtime Scene readers probably know Betsy Phillips’ sharp political acumen and deep knowledge of Tennessee history from her contributions to our news and politics blog Pith in the Wind (or perhaps from a little pub called The Washington Post). But if you haven’t read her books A City of Ghosts and The Wolf’s Bane, you might not know of Aunt B’s skills with fiction.

Jesus Crawdad Death is a chapbook of her short stories recently published by Third Man Books, the publishing arm of Jack White’s Third Man Records. In its pages, Phillips pulls off a trick that the late William Gay (whose ghost appears in one of the pieces) also did extremely well. She makes exploring the sublime and fantastic seem as natural and typical as tying your shoes.

Above, check out a short animated trailer for the book, in which Phillips reads a couple of short passages from each of the three stories in the limited edition book. Pick up a copy from the TMR storefront or via the website.
