Nashville has a fever, and the only cure is: more Scopitones! If you've been in the Belcourt's lobby recently, you've noticed the bulky machine in the corner. It's a Scopitone player, a kind of coin-operated celluloid jukebox from the 1960s that plays specially made music clips on 16mm. The clips, featuring anything from French rock 'n' roll (now this is bad hair) to cocktail exotica, are addictive—sexy, campy and crazy cool, kinda like the West's answer to a Bollywood production number.
As part of its fall membership drive, the Belcourt is hosting a night of Scopitones Sept. 7. To find out more about Scopitone magic, tune in to 1430 WPLN-AM, which will feature a segment at noon today. The spider-web lady says go!
