As part of its Lenten art show and film series "The Silence of God," the Downtown Presbyterian Church offers a rare Nashville screening of a movie that was shut out of local theaters 18 years ago. The movie is Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ, one of the most misunderstood and willfully misinterpreted films of my lifetime. If you've avoided seeing it because you always heard it's a blasphemous travesty, don't believe the hype: it's a deeply moving consideration of the humanity of Christ as well as the divinity, and reconciles them in a way this lapsed Baptist had never considered before.
It's at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Downtown Presbyterian Church at 5th and Church, free and open to the public, with a free meal preceding the film at 5:30 p.m.
