Pie Town-based retail icon Downtown Antique Mall will close May 31 after a nearly 30-year run.
The business is located on the second floors of two connected historic masonry buildings on the east fringe of the Gulch and hugging the SoBro railroad viaduct that spans Eighth Avenue. Downtown Antique Mall is known for being home to multiple vendors selling furniture, clothing, jewelry, art and home decor. The address is 612 Eighth Ave. S.
Pat Morris, the business’ owner, said she will not relocate the business and instead likely will retire. She opened the mall in mid-1990.
Downtown Antique Mall, at which various video shoots have been undertaken, is home to approximately 45 vendors, Morris said. She added that some of her tenants have operated from their respective spaces for 25 years or more.
The closing comes as Harmolio, the New York-based owner of the property, is pondering its options for the six-parcel site (read here). Filmmaker and Nashville native Harmony Korine — who released this year's The Beach Bum and has graced the Scene's pages many, many, many times — is affiliated with Harmolio. Harmolio also owns the nearby Voorhees Building, which Korine, who is now based in Florida, has used as a studio.
Harmolio acquired the Voorhees Building property in 2014 for about $3.5 million, and some of the others in both 2014 and 2015, according to Metro records. With an address of 700 Eighth Ave. S. The Harmolio holdings also include a building, with an address of 620 Eighth Ave. S., that accommodates Epiphany Design Studio. There are two other buildings on the overall footprint.
Of note, multiple projects are planned for Gulch parcels located no more than four blocks from the site (read here).
