Pick of the Day: Patrick DeGuira & Brent Stewart at Zeitgeist

Patrick DeGuira & Brent Stewart

Where: Zeitgeist Gallery, Hillsboro Village

When: Through May 28

It’s exciting to see an artist take a different path, perhaps just as they’ve broken through to new levels of creative expression. Artist Patrick DeGuira usually makes sculptures and objects — things he calls “visual props” — that are consistently smart and interesting. The work he’s prepared for When past becomes afterwards, his show at Zeitgeist, incorporates his 3D work into the 2D realm of paintings and prints.

Joining him is another Nashville-based artist, Brent Stewart. Stewart works primarily with photography and video, and has worked with Harmony Korine since they met in 2003 while Stewart was a student at Goldsmiths College in London. He has also directed a feature, The Colonel's Bride, as well as two videos for Silver Jews: “Sleeping is the Only Love” and “How Can I Love You If You Wont Lie Down?” The work he is showing at this exhibit, titled The Beasts that Shouted Love at the Heart of the World, promises to be at once scary and beautiful.
