Fran Marcum, who lost a bitterly contested Democratic primary against Lincoln Davis in the 4th Congressional District, has defied speculation that she would not endorse Davis in the general election.

“That primary was so negative, so mean and personal, that a lot of people thought that there was no way that Fran would come together with Lincoln for party unity,” one Democratic observer says. “But she’s a real trooper for the party.”

Marcum’s endorsement of Davis comes in the form of a written statement issued to news outlets last week.

“I would like today to take the opportunity to congratulate Lincoln Davis for his victory in the primary,” it begins.

“I always try to think the best of my fellow human beings, and I can only speculate that the deranged statements that spewed from his mouth throughout the campaign against me must be the result of some horrible medical condition.

“Some have said that his campaign speeches resembled the insane ramblings of a person using dangerous illegal drugs—or perhaps abusing prescription medication. I have no personal knowledge about whether this is true, or whether it may possibly even have been the result of a head injury he suffered as a child. I just don’t know. Furthermore, I respect the privacy of medical information, and would not choose to speculate on the matter. This is a time for letting bygones be bygones, not for dwelling on the past.

“And speaking of the past, let me be clear that I don’t hold it against Mr. Davis that he bought hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of television advertising to bad-mouth me from one end of this district to the other. Some have compared his antics to the behavior of a schoolyard bully, secretly consumed with fear that others will discover his inadequacies and, possibly, his undersized genitalia. But I choose not to get in the gutter with this kind of thinking.

“In conclusion, let me once again emphasize that it is important for all of us in our party to be unified for the fall elections, and, in the few short years remaining before he begins a lifetime in an eternal burning hell, it likely would not do irreparable harm to our republic if Mr. Davis were elected to Congress.”
