How should I do lunch?
The Crossroads Cafeteria, the Food Court and, if you run out of time and need a quick snack before class, run to Uncle Dave’s C-Store. The cafeteria offers your usual school lunch, but The Food Court has vendors like Pizza Hut, Freshens Yogurt and Smoothie bar. Although The Food Court and Dave’s are open for most of the day, the cafeteria’s hours are 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
How do I find out what is going on?
Chapel announcements remain one of the best sources of news and events on campus, but students also rely heavily on The Babbler and Lipscomb Live (see What is Lipscomb Live?).
What is Lipscomb Live?
Lipscomb Live is Web cast of all school sponsored events going on around campus, from sports events, to keynote speakers to school-wide social events.
Do I need a car and where do I put it?
Parking is assigned at Lipscomb and word on the street is that the parking situation at the school is pretty terrible. Parking permits cost approximately $60 per semester. Park in an unassigned space and you will get a ticket faster than you can blink.
Are the Health Services healthy?
Yes, students rarely complain about the university’s services. The Health Center is located in the basement of Elam Hall; hours of operation are Mon.-Fri. 7:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The Health Center cannot give you prescription drugs, however.
How do I get my fix?
Obviously there are some students who do drink and do drugs, but they are brave souls. If you are caught drinking or using drugs at Lipscomb, you can be thrown out of school. As for smoking, there’s an unofficial smoking spot on campus called “Smokers’ Alley” located behind Fanning Hall. If you regularly frequent the Alley, be careful not to be caught. Use of tobacco on campus is prohibited.
What is the Rot?
It’s the Marriott, the campus food court where students hang out and eat together during the day.
Where is the Bison and why do people paint it?
Painting the Bison is a famous tradition at Lipscomb. Social clubs and other campus organizations paint the Bison to make a claim on it or to promote up coming social events. However, if you are caught painting the Bison, your club will be fined.
What is University Bible and do I have to go to it?
The University Bible, also referred to as U.B., is a required campus-wide Bible study that students must attend if they are full-time. University Bible is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and features regular speakers—often fellow students who are planning on going into church ministry. Think of University Bible as a hybrid of bible study and chapel. The course, thank God, is pass/fail and you are allowed to miss six bible sessions per semester. (There are 30 per.) After your seventh absence, you will be put on probation.
When is curfew at Lipscomb and what will happen if I miss it?
Strictly enforced on campus, curfew is 12 a.m. Sun. -Thurs., 1 a.m. Fri.-Sat. During the week, you’re given a total of 45 late minutes. This means that throughout the week if you want to stay out later, you have a grace period to get back on campus. According to the Student Handbook, these rules apply only to freshmen and sophomores. Juniors and Seniors can leave campus after curfew if they sign out. If you are not a junior or senior, but are 21 and older and have been living on campus for at least four semesters, you can miss curfew as well.
Is there really a dress code?
Yes. Shorts, for instance, must be no shorter than your finger tips when hands are down at your sides. You cannot wear spaghetti strap tank tops. Jeans cannot have holes in them either. There are to be no shirts with alcoholic beverage companies on them and no shirts promoting tobacco companies. While the dress code at Lipscomb is strict, it is not the most heavily-enforced rule. Some professors do not really pay attention and some will ask you to leave class and change if you are in violation. Know which professors you can get around and which ones will kick you out of class.
Can everyone join a social club?
Just about every student who shows interest in being in a social club can join one. There are, however, some guidelines that have to be met before a student can be eligible. You must have at least a 2.0 GPA and have completed at least one semester as a full-time student at Lipscomb or at another school. Social clubs, the equivalent to a sorority or fraternity at any other school, differ in their lack of national accreditation as a Greek organization.
Is everyone at David Lipscomb religious?
Surprisingly, no. About three quarters of the school’s population is Church of Christ. The rest of the students come from a mixture of other Christian denominations and other religions. Only a small percentage of students on campus are professed atheists. Most of the students who are not of the Christian faith are either commuting students or adult students.
What is the most enforced rule on campus?
Chapel attendance. Chapel is on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and students are permitted nine absences per semester. Students who miss more than nine chapel services are put on probation.
