Toby Keith: A friend to the soldiers (though not actually a soldier)
Ah, the story that keeps on giving. In case you're not a regular Pith reader, a brief synopsis of the events to date:
- In a Rolling Stone story on Kris Kristofferson, Ethan Hawke describes a scene at Willie Nelson's 70th birthday concert in 2003 in which Kristofferson allegedly chewed out a star who "had a monster radio hit about bombing America's enemies back into the Stone Age" for saying, "None of that lefty shit out there tonight, Kris."
- On April 3, Tennessean music reporter Peter Cooper pokes fun at Ethan Hawke for making it completely obvious that the unnamed star is Toby Keith, yet refusing to name him.
- On April 5, Toby Keith denies that the incident ever happened, and for some bizarre reason chews out Peter Cooper in front of a gaggle of reporters in the press room at the Academy of Country Music Awards. A video of the incident soon hits the Internet. Keith erroneously claims that Kristofferson also denied it happened, when in fact, Kristofferson merely said, "I have no memory of talking so tough to anyone at Willie's birthday party...." And there's a lot he doesn't remember.
Which brings us to yesterday, when the Minneapolis Star Tribune ran a seemingly routine preview of Kris Kristofferson's April 14 concert at the Pantages Theatre, which included the following segment:
The Rolling Stone story brought a denial from Keith last week. And Kristofferson himself has retreated from the situation. "Actually, I like Toby Keith, but I don't agree with his politics," said Kristofferson, who will perform tonight in Minneapolis. "There are a lot things in artistry that transcend politics." He says he doesn't even remember the exchange with Keith, but his wife does. "That's something that happened six years ago," he said, "and I can't even remember what I had for breakfast."
So Kristofferson says he doesn't remember the incident, but his wife does? D'oh! Sorry Toby. Kris, being the gentleman that he is, tried to give you cover, but after a long, tiring day on the road, I guess the cat slipped out of the bag. (And his comment on your politics would seem to suggest he's had it with trying to defend you.) Don't feel bad, though, Toby. We kinda knew the truth all along. If you're half the man you pretend to be, maybe it's time to offer Peter Cooper an apology, no? Or are you going to say to Kristofferson's wife, Lisa Meyers, what you said to Cooper—that she's "in default"? (By the way, she's an attorney, so maybe she can explain to you what "in default" really means.)
