What's the Deal With That 'Macarena' Loop on 93.3?

I thought I had forgotten. I thought I'd put the past behind me. But all it took was one syllable to get me air-caking and wiggling my butt like a middle schooler wired on a two-liter of Surge.

I was skimming the radio dial, minding my own business, when I landed on 93.3-FM. My ear was caught by the unmistakable "Heeeeeeeey!" that signified Spanish lounge duo Los del Río's "Macarena" — specifically, the remix by Miami's Bayside Boys that was the hit of the year in the U.S. in 1995.

Intrigued — nay, entranced — I had not choice but to keep listening. To my surprise, the earworm repeated itself. Again. And again. And again. Luckily, I got to the office before things got really out of hand.

As it turns out, this was not the fault of some hapless DJ asleep at the board. In fact, it's deliberate. According to a release, the Cromwell Radio Group (which operates several local radio stations including active-rocking 102.9-FM The Buzz and sports station 102.5-FM The Game) is looping "Macarena" over and over to perform an engineering test on a new translator on 93.3.

The test began at noon on March 25; no word yet on when it will end. There has also yet to be an announcement of what format the station will take. But when you've got the "Macarena," what more do you really need? Hat tip to intern Amy McBrayer for pointing out that the station also has a Twitter feed so you can keep up with its schedule of rounds of "Macarena."
