Watch Children Medieval Band Totally Slay Rammstein, The White Stripes, The Beatles and More

Unless you're on vacation in Bermuda this week, you'll have noticed that the freakish warm spell is over, and Middle Tennessee is back to seasonally appropriate frigid temperatures. If you need a little something to defrost the ol' heartstrings (while you defrost your windshield, perhaps), look no further than Children Medieval Band, the trio of Southern California kids who became a viral sensation last week.

On Jan.6, Peanut Butter Wolf (ace producer and founder of outstanding Bay Area hip-hop label Stones Throw Records) posted a video of the band playing Rammstein's "Sonne" to his Facebook page (see it below, embedded from CMB's own YouTube channel). To date, Peanut Butter Wolf's upload has been played some 10 million times, and with good reason: The three siblings perform with an astonishing cohesion and panache that make it immediately clear that it is not their first rodeo, despite their surprising ages.

When the clip was filmed in 2012, drummer/harpist Cornelia was five years old, keyboardist Olga was eight and guitarist Stefan was 10. While the Internet-at-large is in the midst of discovering Children Medieval Band, the flamboyant, pyro-loving German hard rockers they covered learned about them not long after the vid was originally published, and even invited them to open an arena show in Denver, Colo. That went over pretty well with the crowd; if the show sold out, you hear about 10,000 fans screaming.

As the young multi-instrumentalists have grown, they've become proficient on a variety of instruments, learning Medieval music and "good rock" music. As defined by the parent or parents who run their website, that's the stuff that's "sincere, rebel, strong and heart-felt," as opposed to "evil" or "frivolous rock," characterized as "‘drugs-sex-rr’, ‘shake-butt’ and ‘aspartame’ mainstream pollution." I'm certainly down with less "aspartame mainstream pollution."

Doubtless, there will come a time when they outgrow the family band (hey, the parents are encouraging the kids to embrace rebellion — they know what's coming in the teen years), but it seems like they're well prepared to dominate any musical endeavor they choose. In addition to their Rammstein covers and a slew of Medieval pieces, they've released an album of post-punk-tinged originals called Treasure Underground, as well as a slew of covers, running the gamut from The Beatles and Kraftwerk to The White Stripes and The Stranglers. Check out a few choice cuts below.

(By the way, if your kiddos have seen these videos and are begging to start a band themselves, registration is now open for Y.E.A.H.'s Southern Girls' Rock 'n' Roll Camp and Rock Block programs, taking place in Nashville and Murfreesboro this June and July. Check out The Spin's visit to last summer's SGRRC showcase for more.)

ICYMI, the Rammstein cover that's been making the rounds.

This is from March 2012.This video is now unlisted. One of the reasons is that lately we got more idiotic comments from people who don't understand much.

The Rammstein team had this video posted on the R+ site: http://www.rammstein.de/en/news/there-is-a-future-for-rockn-roll/.

On May 20th 2012 the kids opened up for the Rammstein concert at Denver Coliseum, Colorado, and played this song (after Ich Will) in front of a great audience of 10,000 people. Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JxRmlQKNgk

We'd like to thank most commentators; kids are happy that their work is rewarded with appreciation.

There are other commentators, some simply nasty or others honestly concerned, which we'd like to answer here:

Only 5 yrs and 8 mo, Cornelia is helping her older brother and sister to record one of their favorite songs. Rammstein has some amazing compositions, likeable to younger kids too.

Children Medieval Band:

Stefan (10) - vocal, guitar, violin

Olga (8) - keyboard

Cornelia (5) - drum, harp

The children improved their musicianship by using the EarPower software from http://www.earpower.com

The truth is we are not so crazy about the quality of the sound. It's under the standard of a professional album, and we simply consider it as "100% homemade". But still, we are confident this is a good thing and we hope you will appreciate the efforts put into this.

We expect criticism, but we are already aware of all issues, and have rated ourselves, on a scale of 1-10:

- Recording - 2 (due to low budget equipment)

- Mixing - 4 (inexperience)

- Mastering - 5 (except three songs done by others: Mark Aviles and ADG Mastering)

- Performance - 7

- Lyrics - 9

- Originality & non-conventional - 10

- Avoidance of FE (frivolous-evil) - 10

Since we like to exaggerate a bit :), we dare to say that this is one of the most original albums ever made by a kids' band.

A choice early Beatles selection, "From Me to You," played with the enthusiastic controlled chaos of the original.

Stefan (10 yo) -- voice, guitar, harmonica

Olga (9 yo) -- voice, keyboard

Cornelia (6 yo) -- voice, drums

And yes, Cornelia is using the Rammstein drumsticks received from Christoph Schneider.

The kids learned the vocal parts from Galeazzo Frudua: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k43ZBsBfBW8

Their "Seven Nation Army" is right up there with The White Stripes' original. Plus, it has a trumpet fanfare!

Home recording on Sept. 2012. There is also a live version, 3 years later (San Diego Faire- June 2015):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XPlnAHq6a4

Stefan' stare is probably intended towards our bashers of such poor taste, in particular those from that 'kb' site.

Maybe they don't have 3-D projection, and only one keyboard, but they put their all into Kraftwerk's "The Robots," conjuring the disquieting ambiguity of the original.

This is a live performance from the San Diego Fair where the kids played an impressive 15 songs concert. More info about this show: http://childrenmedievalband.wordpress.com/2013/07/01/the-san-diego-fair-show/

This song is part of our study on the history of rock. Kraftwerk may be considered as the fathers of electronic music. We've always liked this song and its lyrics.

Another video of the same performance, taken from another angle, featuring the young drummer Cornelia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfhs7VW2yvs

CMB's latest is a cover of English post-punks The Stranglers, noteworthy for their complex keyboard parts.

Stranglers is one of our favorite bands. Out of their many great songs we choose Threatened.

To those concerned that we don't look 'happy':

Hey, Stefan here, thanks for your concern, but I'm almost 14 and nobody's forcing us. I'm the leader of this band (whenever my sisters don't give me a hard time) and we definitely don't like the 'shake-butt' disco or the 'bad-ass' evil metal many other kids enjoy. We like this song because it's clever and intense. Otherwise we like a lot of Beatles, which most kids don't enjoy (and that's one big reason why we don't look too enthusiastic). Anyway, we would be happier if more people would buy our first album "Treasure Underground". Thanks.
