Familiar with Sunday Valley? They were bestowed with the honor of "Best New Outlaw Band" by contributor Edd Hurt in
this year's Best of Nashville issue. "On this year's amazing debut full-length To the Wind and on to Heaven," opined Hurt, "Sunday Valley frontman John Sturgill Simpson makes like a freight-train-speed Southern rocker with roots in the Appalachian moan of Sturgill's distant relative, Dock Boggs, and the proto-country of Charlie Poole."
Well, the Valley boys have roots in Kentucky, and it was to the Bluegrass State they returned in order to record an installment of Ten in Twenty: A Lexington Recording Project. You see, for the recording of an album called Ten in Twenty, 10 different artists with Lexington ties will record a song apiece in a grand total of ... wait for it ... 20 days. What resulted from Sunday Valley's session was "Goodbye" — a properly overdriven barnburner of a country-rock tune. See a video of Sunday Valley recording "Goodbye" above. It's got two things I can never seem to look away from: an open-handed drummer and someone playing a Telecaster.
