Red Kentucky Girl: Loretta Lynn's Trump Endorsement Is The (Bitter) Pill

This news hit us like an unseemly political opinion casually delivered  from the mouth of a beloved older relative at a family gathering — and as in those moments, we desperately wanted to let it pass unacknowledged. But with great Blog comes great responsibility, so we're honor-bound to report that country music living legend Loretta Lynn is supporting Donald Trump

The Coal Miner's Daughter tells Reuters that The Donald has closed the deal with her:

“Trump has sold me – what more can I say?” Lynn told me over the phone just before the start of Trump’s rally Thursday in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Lynn’s friend, Phyllis Jones, 71, had driven to Rock Hill from nearby Charlotte, North Carolina, and had called her famous pal while she waited for Trump to appear.

Lynn, 83, who penned and recorded country hits like “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” “The Pill” and “Rated X,” still performs between eight and 10 shows a month. She said she has been stumping for Trump at the end of each show, and declared her support for him at an awards dinner in New York in early December.

Well, shit.

Lynn goes on to say that she'd like to campaign for Trump, a hairpiece wearing a body that's running for president, but she's going to wait for the candidate to call her. We hope this doesn't happen.

It's not shocking that Lynn is a Republican — she's an 83-year-old country singer. But no matter how many stadiums fill up to see him, we're always surprised anew to find someone supporting Donald Trump.

Still, like that old relative you love too much to argue with about the real reasons for the Civil War, we can't quit Loretta Lynn. So in the meantime, we're going to meditate on the magical Nashville night nearly a year ago when Lynn opened for Jack White at Bridgestone Arena, and pray for this presidential election to end quickly.
