Hey, how about some Park the Van for your Monday night? Remember that "Oh Mandy" song? Remember Krillington Zero? (OK, forget Krillington Zero.) Anyway, Pepi Ginsberg's in town, too. Here's Jewly Hight, from our Critics' Picks:
Pepi Ginsberg may well be the only girl in the van on the Park the Van Fall Tour. Her bandmates are all guys (guitarist Amnon Freidlin, bassist Jon Guez and drummer Pete Angevine, who sometimes beats on things other than designated percussion instruments—boxes and cookie sheets, for instance) and so are her indie-pop tour and label mates, the Spinto Band and the Generationals. All of them will be fresh from playing CMJ in Ginsberg's home base of Brooklyn. She sings in a dramatic throaty sigh (akin to PJ Harvey's) and her songs wax whimsical and psychedelic, '60s style. One of her catchiest ones—the girl-group-meets-indie-folk "Waterline"—was inspired by a girl she saw tripping on acid outside a church. Dr. Dog's Scott McMicken (Ginsberg's best-known label mate) produced last year's RED, and she just released a digital EP, Shake This, to be followed by a nervy-sounding full-length titled East Is East in January.
