Just before winter kicked off, we saw the debut offering from The Mute Group, a new project from Zachary Gresham (formerly of Umbrella Tree) and friends. The vid for the mellow R&B-tinged tune "Brainplate in Eb" is a colorful, time-twisting introduction to the band's take on pop music, taken from tracks recorded at Jeremy Ferguson's local Battle Tapes studio.
Now that spring is here (the vernal equinox, when the days begin to get longer, was on March 20), the band returns with a delightful stop-motion piece that marks the changing of the seasons in a way that salutes both the science that causes the change (e.g., the tilt of the earth as it orbits the sun) and the human rituals that celebrate it.
Above, check out the video for the gentle, harmony-rich tune "AEIOU," in which a cluster of lights rotates around a Stonehenge-like structure. As the monument rises and falls, a tree grows from underneath, birds take up residence, and the whole cycle starts again. And if that puts you in the mood for more Stonehenge action, be sure to check out my other two favorite songs about the 'henge, courtesy of Spinal Tap and The Soft Boys.
