One of many things the pandemic has prevented is a proper hometown release party for Margo Price’s That’s How Rumors Get Started. (At least she got to play not too far away at The Caverns in May.) The country-soul-rock songsmith plays well with others, and it’s almost guaranteed there’d be one hell of a parade of guest appearances.

It’s not quite the same as calling up outstanding pals from the audience, but she did get a big assist from some friends in a performance that aired as part of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Friday. As part of the show’s #PlayAtHome musical guest series, Price filmed a unique rendition of “Hey Child,” a Rumors song about maintaining strength in rough times. The album version features a swelling soul-rock arrangement, which is pared way back here to pianist Micah Hulscher. But this take is huge in a different way: Adia Victoria, Kyshona, Kam Franklin and Allison Russell all take turns singing lead and filling out a massive harmony section.

Check it out above and keep an eye on Price’s website and social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) for updates on her tour, which doesn’t currently have any local dates. But you can see Russell and Victoria with Jason Isbell at the Ryman in October. And you can check out Kyshona’s therapeutic songwriting program Your Song, which recently opened a physical location.
