Go inside one of the greatest-ever untold stories: how the ordinary people of America were given the opportunity to make records for the first time.
Sir Elton John and Nashville's resident blues-rock icon Jack White teaming up for an old-school blues jam was something we never knew we wanted, but now, thanks to the producers of American Epic — a three-part documentary on the American recording industry and its embrace (and commodification) of ethnic and regional music, partly a response to radio eroding the market for recorded pop music in the 1920s — and the folks at PBS, we've got it. And it's just as good as you'd imagine.
The documentary itself, executive-produced by White, T Bone Burnett and Robert Redford, was broadcast in May. Above, watch a scene from American Epic Sessions, a feature-length special made up of in-studio performances recorded using a re-creation of the first electrical recording system. In this clip, White and Sir Elton groove through a brand new old-fashioned blues number called "Two Fingers of Whiskey." The music legends' stylings blend together perfectly as John bellows soulfully on vocals and rips on piano "Take Me to the Pilot"-style, while Jack White wails on guitar and backing vocals.
