"If We Were Vampires," a cut from Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit's chart-topping LP The Nashville Sound, is a curious philosophical take on one of the most bittersweet things I can think of: Even the best of marriages ends eventually, with the death of one partner or the other. The twist is that the finite nature contributes to making marriage the special thing that it is — if we were vampires, with a relationship that theoretically could go on forever, would we really want it to?

A cleverly animated music video, which premiered via Entertainment Weekly, explores that notion in depth, following cartoon vampire versions of Isbell and wife Amanda Shires through a melancholy dreamworld. The impressionistic piece was put together by Neighborhoods Apart's Joshua Britt and Neilson Hubbard, who also made a video for "Harmless" from Shires' My Piece of Land. Check it out above, and look for Isbell and Shires at the Ryman during his upcoming October run, recently extended to six nights.
