After spending nearly a decade growing into one of the finest rock bands in the business, punk-pop guitarmy Diarrhea Planet took a triumphant bow in September 2018 with a series of three shows at Exit/In. They briefly came out of retirement a month later, opening for Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit at the Ryman (with guest appearances by Isbell, 400 Unit guitarist Sadler Vaden and Sturgill Simpson).
Opportunities to see DP once they announced their retirement were limited. While that meant those shows were special and pretty intimate, there’s also a decent chance you missed out. As has often been the case, A/V ace and dedicated documentarian of local music Stephen “TompDogg” Thompson had you covered. He filmed all three of the band’s E/I shows, which will be released as a region-free two-disc Blu-Ray set, appropriately titled Live at Exit/In, via Infinity Cat.
Thompson filmed at 1080p resolution with 10 camera angles, and there was a multi-channel recording that’s been professionally mixed and mastered. The final product includes all 32 original songs the group played over the course of the three nights, sequenced on the first disc. On the second disc, you’ll find a repeat of three songs — “Enter the Great Gate / Emmett’s Vision,” “Kids” and “Ghost With a Boner” — but with the ability to switch between the 10 different camera angles. The set will be released Dec. 3, and you can preorder it now for $20 via Infinity Cat’s webstore. While supplies last, preorders include a special patch of the six-fingered package art by drummer Ian “Tuff Gus” Bush.
We’ve spotlighted Thompson’s work several times, and you definitely saw it if you snagged the film-and-album package of JEFF the Brotherhood’s Halloween 2015 show at War Memorial Auditorium. Above, see a trailer he assembled that shows you several angles simultaneously on a portion of “Kids.”
