Local rockers publishing books of poetry is becoming something of a trend: Last month, PUJOL's Daniel Pujol celebrated the release of his chapbook Mighty Stranger with a swell party at The East Room, which included readings over an ambient set from melodic post-hardcore outfit Watcher. If you keep a watch on the calendar, you'll notice that there's a broadening range of regular recurring poetry readings, and it's cool to see poetry crossing paths with other media more frequently, too: See Matt Johnstone's popular monthly Et Al. event, which pairs readings with pop-up visual art exhibitions.
Veteran songsmith extraordinaire Tristen Gaspadarek has a forthcoming volume of her own called Saturnine, which is the inaugural title from CTR Press, the publishing wing of Adam Landry, Justin Collins and Marchelle Brandanini's Cosmic Thug Records. Saturnine will be the first in a collection of pocket-size books from CTR, modeled on the famous series published by Lawrence Ferlinghetti's City Lights Bookstore.
Saturnine is a selection of 18 lyrical pieces which examine the struggle to carve out your own identity in a landscape riddled with forces that are more than happy to do that for you. You can preorder a copy or pick one up at a free launch party and reading Tristen will host at Grimey's Too and Howlin' Books next Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 6 p.m.
