You can bet Pride celebrations will be extra dazzling this year. They’re always held near the end of June to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, a series of demonstrations that constitute a landmark event in public advocacy for LGBT rights, and 2019 is the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. And the 31st annual Nashville Pride festival promises to be an outstanding contribution to the international party.
Organizers brought their A game to the music lineup in recent years (note appearances by Lizzo and Big Freedia in 2017 and Wilson Phillips in 2018), and they’ve done it again for this year’s concerts in Public Square Park on June 22-23. Your headliner is none other than TLC, the Atlanta-based R&B superstars who ruled the charts in the ’90s. Sadly, the trio was reduced to a duo with the 2002 death of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, but Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas will close out the second night of Pride’s music programming. Expect hits like “No Scrubs,” “Unpretty, “Creep” and “Waterfalls,” as well as “Way Back,” the Snoop Dogg-featuring single from their 2017 self-titled album. You could be forgiven for not having high expectations for a comeback, but “Way Back” is as effortlessly infectious and groovy as anything they’ve ever done.

TLC is the tip of the iceberg that is this lineup. Killers-approved Utah rockers Neon Trees headline on Saturday, along with local rock outfit Taco Mouth and also-local pop singers Spazz Cardigan and Stasney Mav, among others. On Sunday, look out for New York rapper Cakes da Killa and local pop pros Myylo and Houston Kendrick, the latter of whom contributor and resident pop expert Lance Conzett once said “might have been genetically engineered to sing slow jams.”
And there’s more. There’s a stage featuring an array of drag performers including Vivica Versace, who was crowned Miss Nashville Pride 2018. Community radio station WXNA also has a stage, but that lineup hasn’t been announced yet.
Tickets are an outstanding deal at $10 for a two-day general-admission pass, but lots of upgrades are available. See all of those on the Pride website, where you’ll also find details on more events like the Pride Parade.
