Soccer Mommy Ponders the Dark Side in ‘Lucy’ [Fresh Track]

Soccer Mommy is one of Nashville’s gifts to the world. The project of singer, songwriter and guitarist Sophie Allison has released a handful of tracks since the well-received 2018 debut LP Clean. However, those releases (see “Henry” backed with a cover of Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire” and “Blossom (Demo)” backed with “Be Seeing You”) have been clearing the backlog of songs while Allison and bandmates Julian Powell and Graeme Goetz have been playing all over the place with Kacey Musgraves, Paramore, Stephen Malkmus and others, not to mention festival gigs at Coachella and elsewhere. 

Today, we have a completely new song to check out. In the new single “Lucy” — whose Matrix-esque lyric video, by Zev Deans and Lordess Foudre, you can see above — Allison explores a darker side of her songwriting while staying true to the project’s elevated bedroom-pop sound. The slow beat and chiming guitar figure holds a steady pace for Allison, who croons chilling lyrics that address an inner battle between seduction and vulnerability. 

“It's a song about struggling with inner demons and your own morality,” says Allison in a release, “but I masked it with this scenario of being seduced by the devil. I'm really excited to share this with everyone because I think it shows a different side of my writing.”
