Pixies at the Ryman in 2014 (left); Weezer at the Ryman in 2014
Quick: Name the most influential rock album of the late 1980s. OK, now name the most influential rock album of the mid-'90s (post-Nirvana ... and not counting OK Computer). Got 'em?
Unless you're one of those people who's all, "Duh, The Smiths' The Queen Is Dead and Green Day's Dookie, respectively," then there's a pretty damn good chance your answers are Pixies' Doolittle and Weezer's self-titled debut, better known as the Blue Album. Well, great news for you if those were indeed your answers: The two monsters of dweeby alt rock have announced a co-headlining tour, which will hit Nashville's own Ascend Amphitheater in July.
Of course, both acts have come through Nashville with some frequency in recent years, riding high on the tide of rock 'n' roll nostalgia. Weezer even went so far as to pull a two-night stand the Ryman back in 2014, playing Weezer on Night 1 and Pinkerton on Night 2. Pixies played the aforementioned Doolittle in full at the Mother Church back in 2010, and have played the legendary auditorium twice more since then. As both bands note on their sites, Pixies and Weezer have shared stages before, but never on a full-scale tour. But Weezer hearts Pixies, says Weezer. And Pixies heart Weezer, say Pixies. So why not combine forces and play venues that are twice as big!
The seven-week co-headlining tour will hit Ascend on Saturday, July 28, 2018. Tickets go on sale Friday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m. Keep an eye on Ascend's site.
So, will the two bands join forces and play a mash-up song onstage? "Where Is My Hash Pipe"? "Monkey Gone to Beverly Hills"? "My Name Is Bone Machine"? Hey, this is fun.
