Followers of the local rock and pop scenes will likely know and love Ornament, the trio of Will Mann, Ryan Donoho and Alec O'Connell. The group has an excellent facility for thoughtful, melodic, grooving tunes that build on the example of ’60s and ’70s pop and psych artists like Harry Nilsson. For more than four years, they've been writing, gigging and recording, but you had to catch them in person to hear most of the songs (though we did crown "It Must Be the Season" backed with "Family Happiness" as Best Rock Single in 2017).
Now, some great and long-awaited news comes our way via an email from Donoho: Ornament will release their debut album ... As Is on Oct. 11 with help from friend and co-producer Jeffrey Novak (Cheap Time, Savoy Motel) through the Official Memorabilia label. Today, we're very pleased to premiere the track "Rayon City" from the album.Â
It's a piano-driven tune, named for the Old Hickory-area neighborhood where Mann and Donoho grew up. The lyric considers both the forces that might drive you toward the comfort of nostalgia as well as the dull, numbing weight that it can become.
Give it a spin below and plan to catch the group at The East Room on Oct. 11 before they head out on tour; they're set to play that night with Safety Net and Styrofoam Winos. There's no event page for that concert yet, nor a preorder link for the album, but you can follow Ornament on Facebook for updates.
