The Rumba Madre is a transnational, multicultural trio that loves to mix it up with different genres and oddball humor. That much was obvious in the song "La Rumba Del Coco" and its video, in which the group tackled the strict and ruthless U.S. immigration system with surreal comedy and clever visuals.
With the release of their new album Prisiones y Fugas (or Prisons and Escapes), the group expands on their mix of rumba, flamenco, punk and more. Their sound navigates traditional and new-school styles, and their lyrics tackle the personal and political — all with a certain amount of joy and lightness to the endeavor. The energetic “Your ‘Favourite’ Mariachi,” for example, highlights the struggle to simultaneously assimilate into Nashville's culture and make it as musicians. As singer David Vila laments: “It’s really sad to spend / More then 10 months every year / Waiting for the Hispanic Heritage Month.”
The LP was produced by Grammy-winning producer and engineer Iván Gutiérrez Carrasquillo, who worked with Puerto Rico’s heralded and fiercely political rap duo Calle 13. Not a bad flex for a band that proves to be a notable entry in Nashville’s diverse and growing roster of Latinx and Spanish-speaking musicians.
The Rumba Madre also dropped a tongue-in-cheek short documentary with some bold claims — see that above. After meeting the crew, stream Prisiones y Fugas via Spotify below. Check out The Rumba Madre's Facebook page for updates.
