Margo Price Covers ‘WAP’ on The Daily Show

“WAP,” Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s raunchy, explicit and fun-as-hell collaboration, has been inescapable since it dropped last week, racking up record streams and plenty of praise from fans for its bold declaration of women's sexual agency. Driven by the rap stars’ swaggering lyrics and inspired sample of a Baltimore club classic, the hit song has also stirred up the ire of puritanical conservatives.

Country star Margo Price, a recent Scene cover gal, performed a mellow acoustic cover for The Daily Show — recruited by contributor and comedian Dulce Sloan to prove her point that men would still be offended by the song in any genre.

It’s kind of an obvious bit: YouTube is full of white people with guitars singing folksy covers of rap songs. But this is a more clever pairing of song and artist. “WAP” has come under fire from sexless conservative men around the nation — like Ben Shapiro, who seems unaware that a “p-word” can get wet  — while Price has been pushing back against conservative elements in country music to call out racism and sexism that keeps women and artists of color from the highest levels of success in the industry. It’s more than a joke, it’s a feminist joining of forces complete with bucket-and-mop.

Of course, it is pretty funny to hear Price croon the clever lyrics that Cardi delivered with booming bravado — like “Pussy A-1 just like his credit” or the especially bawdy “I want you to touch that li'l dangly thing that swing in the back of my throat.”
