Lizzo at Cannery Ballroom, 5/7/2019
It seems that it’s the year of Lizzo in Music City — as it is around the world, and as it should be. The absolutely phenomenal songwriter and performer is set to headline her third show in town this year (each of which has been in a progressively bigger venue). Following a sold-out show at Cannery Ballroom in May and another sell-out Sept. 30 at the Ryman, she’ll top the bill at the third annual Live. Life. Love. concert for suicide prevention, organized by 107.5-FM The River.
Proceeds from the show will benefit the long-running suicide prevention and mental health advocacy organization To Write Love on Her Arms. (Paper recently had a lengthy interview with founder Jamie Tworkowski that discussed the organization’s beginning and its evolution.) Jon Bellion, Chelsea Cutler, Louis Tomlinson and Lovelytheband round out the bill. The show is Saturday, Nov. 30, at Municipal Auditorium, and tickets go on sale right here at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 11.
Setting aside her star power as as performer, Lizzo is an excellent advocate for the very worthy cause. A considerable quantity of her material is about the critical work of self-care (the real deal, not the branding effort), and it’s woven into her discourse with conversational grace. The River’s program director mentions in a release that the previous two shows raised more than $30,000 for TWLOHA, and it won’t be surprising if this concert eclipses that figure on its own.
While you wait for the tickets to go on sale, take a gander at the expert “Truth Hurts”/Aristocats mashup that made the rounds earlier this week. If you aren't one of the million-plus people who’s already watched it on Instagram, you can thank us later; if you are, you'll know you want to it again.
