Forest of Tygers Stares Into the Abyss on I Will Die of Violence [Fresh Tracks]

New material from Forest of Tygers is a rare gift for local metalheads. The married duo of Rachel and Jim Valosik always makes it worth the wait, though — see their 2017 single/short film “Mongers” and similar treatment for 2015’s “Pay of Pigs.” Now, they’ve completed their debut full-length I Will Die of Violence. 

The record opens with white noise and gentle strumming. But that serenity is only a temporary refuge before an onslaught of artillery-like drums, guitar riffs that burst through the darkness like strobes and heart-stopping screams. Slower sections highlight the sophistication of their musicianship, which pulls from a variety of metal traditions — doom and black metal are prominent in the mix — and helps perpetuate an ominous atmosphere that all kinds of metalheads can appreciate. 

The album’s production highlights their connections across scenes. Mikey Allred of Holy Mountain Top Removers recorded and mixed; Kayla Phillips of Pulsatile Tinnitus and Bleed the Pigs has a guest vocal on “Lord of Fear”; and the record was mastered by Nashville expat Brad Boatright of From Ashes Rise.
