These days, you probably know Jeremy Fetzer best as one-half of the duo at the core of Steelism, the (mostly) instrumental country/pop/funk/krautrock band behind 2014's 615 to FAME and this year's ism. Among many other gigs, you may remember Fetzer as a member of the stellar rock band The Deep Vibration, whose song "I Was Cruel" became one of the highlights of Caitlin Rose's LP The Stand-In (on which Fetzer also played). (Fun fact: Dude's also a noteworthy graphic designer.)
Until recently, Fetzer hasn't released any solo material. That changed last Friday when he dropped his debut EP Wisdom of the Octopus. The three original tracks were performed and recorded by Steelism and members of its extended family: Fetzer with steelist Spencer Cullum, bassist Jon Estes, drummer Jon Radford, utility man Robbie Crowell and violinist Kristin Weber, with an assist on writing, engineering and background vocals from Reno Bo. But the tunes bear only a passing relationship to the Steelism sound — mostly in that they draw on pop music, and they're expertly performed.
Today, we're very pleased to premiere Octopus' opening cut "You Should Know by Now," which recalls The Byrds, The Beach Boys and other top pop artists from the late ’60s, right at the point on the continuum between their most tuneful work and their most psychedelic. Give it a spin above, and grab a copy of the EP right here.
