Sad Baxter (aka the duo of singer-songwriter-guitarist Deezy Violet and drummer Alex Mojaverian) has mastered the art of handling uncomfortable feelings with confidence via songcraft. Last summer’s So Happy was an outstanding embodiment of the duo's ability to blend sweet and sour in a way that both gives you permission to accept feeling like garbage and encourages you to pull yourself through it, and we crowned them Best Band in 2018’s Best of Nashville issue.
During the latter half of 2018, they started work on some new material, and we’re very pleased to premiere a new single from the group today. “The Atmos” dives into some territory that no one wants to be in, but we’ve all had to deal with from time to time: The end of a friendship or other personal relationship, a split that seems final and ultimate.
"This song is about realizing you might not have anything left to give to a personal relationship with someone,” says Violet in an email. “Sometimes people just close themselves off emotionally, or close themselves off from everyone, to revel in their own self-pity and delusions of what their life should be like. These people are still there physically, but now feel so wildly out of reach.”
It’s a dark concept, but the duo presents it in a cathartic blast of melodious, crunchy riffage. Give it a spin below, and look for the band on tour with fellow grunge-schooled Nashvillians Reality Something at the end of April. They’ll play East Side all-ages space Drkmttr on April 24 with Datenight and Lonely Parade — watch the Facebook event page for more details on that.
