From the Dept. of “It’s a Little Embarrassing, But It Shouldn’t Be”: We’ve all done things that were against our better judgement to try and get the attention of someone we wanted, very badly, to like us. In middle school, I didn’t care at all about Hanson, but I sure wanted the girls in my class, most of whom were Hanson superfans, to think I did.
I got my mom to buy me a copy of Middle of Nowhere and actually ended up liking it a lot. That’s not a bad thing; people who’ve kept up with the band tell me they’re still pretty great. But what I did was totally performative and had nothing to do with my real taste. And it didn’t help me out in the romance department — a double bummer for 10-year-old me.
Thoughtful and artful trio Peachy, who we crowned Best Punk Band in 2019, has just released their first new single since their stellar 2018 EP Squirt. “Waiting” is one of several new tunes recorded with Bully’s Alicia Bognanno at the controls and mastered by Battle Tapes’ Jeremy Ferguson. The sound is a bit more Superchunk-y than the band’s previous work, but the lyric doesn’t flinch as it dives right into the messy parts of one’s feelings.
“Waiting is a tale of unrequited love — presenting a version of yourself to convince someone to love you, but discovering the only feelings you have the power to change are your own,” says guitarist Rachel Warrick, who wrote this tune and takes the lead vocal. “A lesson in life and love that sometimes people just don't feel the same way about you as you do for them and you have to accept that and move on.”
Today, we’re very pleased to premiere the music video for the track. In the piece, Warrick, bassist Leah Miller and drummer Benji Coale all appear as clowns. It’s a pantomime of very human impulses gone very wrong.
“For some reason when we started thinking about doing a video for ‘Waiting,’ I couldn't stop picturing Rachel as a clown,” says Miller, who directed the vid. “I felt like it was a good representation of putting on a face, trying to entertain and love someone in hopes for something more, but ultimately being left feeling like a clown! So, I made a cute clown costume and added little elements to give it the vibe of a weird high school talent show. It's silly and awkward like us.”
Check it out above, and get the track via the Bandcamp embed below. Thirty percent of all proceeds from purchases are set to benefit the Nashville Free Store at Drkmttr. Miller says to expect some more of the songs the band recorded with Bognanno to appear throughout the winter as singles, while work continues on a full-length. Keep up with the band on Facebook and Instagram for updates.
