What seems like an age ago — though it's not quite three years — The Spin caught singer-guitarist Kyle Numann and singer-percussionist Amoretta Taylor during Bitchfest 5 at Turn One, and was pleasantly surprised to find they weren't your garden variety on-the-nose folk-punk situation. Since then, they've added even more layers and nuances with help from cellist/bassist Chris Wilson, and they're releasing Dark Energy, their second full-length under the name Cloudmouth, this week.
The trio blends influences from folk, jazz, late-’60s-vintage pop and more into a distinctive and delightfully unsettled sound. Even when a pleasant chord progression goes rippling by, there's no telling whether it will turn into an ominous shuffle or dissipate into electronic stardust. And the sound is an appropriate fit for the songs, which look at how we get by in the complicated world we live in. "Don't Make Me Watch," about how we interact with the media (and how it interacts with us), is one example that lands close to home: "I don’t wanna know / But I begin to think that I’m part of the show," sings Numann.
We're very pleased to premiere the album today. Give it a listen below, and click through to preorder a copy.
You've got two chances to catch Cloudmouth in person this week: Thursday, they'll be part of the MusiCircus happening at Oz Arts, and Friday, they'll play a release party for Dark Energy at The East Room. Lylas, The Mute Group and Basic Printer will be on hand for that one, which starts at 8 p.m. — keep a watch on the Facebook event page for updates.
