Back in 2018, post-punk quartet Donors released an intriguing self-titled EP. That release came across as an interesting twist on a tradition that’s typically all about snare-tight playing: “While they aren’t sloppy, the players loosen the screws quite a bit in a way that makes the whole thing feel uneasy," the Cream opined then.
On Jan. 31, Donors released a new EP via local label To-Go Records that follows its predecessor in two key ways: It’s also titled Donors, and it maintains that off-kilter, post-hardcore, is-the-center-gonna-hold feeling. (One personnel shift to note: Josh Gillis left the group after the new EP was recorded, and former Depression Breakfast guitarist Linda Parrott has joined.) Also similarly to the previous EP, the lyrics look at how it’s difficult to feel anything but unsettled in our current sociopolitical climate. Standout song “Help Yourself” is a critique of a culture that rewards individual success but makes it unnecessarily difficult for people to get ahead.
