Dunno about you, but I know I feel way more confident after I get a haircut. There's no question that a person's appearance has nothing to do with the content of their character, but there's also no denying that we all at least register the way someone looks when we see them. Thankfully, I can afford to get my unruly mop shaped up on a fairly regular basis. But not everyone is so lucky, and it isn't fair to hold it against them.
To help out, the Eastside hairstyle haven Scout's Barbershop is offering free haircuts on Nov. 20 (during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week) to those experiencing homelessness or otherwise struggling to get by. To raise awareness of the effort, which they've dubbed "Haircuts for Humans," they've produced a video in conjunction with the Music Row songster who goes by the nom de plume Republican Hair. Above, see the Scout's crew set up a little guerrilla salon and hook a few folks up with a handsome new 'do, to the tune of a bouncy RH jam that you can hear on the new album High and Tight, which is out today (you can also catch a free show at Soulshine Pizza Factory tonight at 7 p.m., or hear it live on Lightning 100).
There are a few ways you can help out. First, you can sponsor a haircut — and no, Scout's isn't pocketing the $24: All proceeds go to the Martha O'Bryan Center, which will be helping transport people to and from the barber shop. You can donate in person at Scout's or online at haircutsforhumans.org. Second, from now until Thanksgiving, all proceeds from the purchase of Republican Hair t-shirts will go to Martha O'Bryan as well. Last and certainly not least, you can donate non-perishable food items to be distributed through Martha O'Bryan, either at the Center itself or collection points at Scout's, Edley's and Hot Yoga of East Nashville. After all, looks are only skin deep.
