Cream Premiere: Republican Hair Sings of Naked Ambition in 'Birthday Suit'
Cream Premiere: Republican Hair Sings of Naked Ambition in 'Birthday Suit'

Straight out of Nashville comes the mysteriously monikered motherfucker named Republican Hair. The artist, or project, is a hyper-hooky Talking Heads- and Devo-indebted sharp and peppy left turn into the realm of Morning in America-era, New Wave-homaging, contorted, cockeyed pop. It's perhaps the last thing you'd expect to come from the head of an established Music Row songwriter. Adding a little intrigue to this uncharacteristically twang-bereft project — said songwriter is opting to keep his identity a secret … at least for now.

"He's just a crazy dude who happens to be an amazing country songwriter but wanted to put out a slightly punk project," his PR rep tells the Scene. "He lives over in East Nashville, has backyard chickens, a kid and a wife."

Per a somewhat whacky press release, the Republican Hair manifesto goes something like this:

The project's actual inspiration is threefold. One, this current election cycle in all its pro-wrestling-style glory. Two, a close associate of the band who sports a somewhat elegantly conservative quaff. And, three, a songwriting epiphany. Our main man tasked himself with writing and recording each track in 6-8 hours, and likens this creative process to "the Twitter of artistic expression."

But really, at this point all you need to know is that the tunes totally rule, as exemplified by the nudist-positive number "Birthday Suit," the hyper-colorful clip for which we're premiering below.

"[It] seems like the most monumental experiences in life require no clothing: Birth, death, reproduction, swimming, Burning Man," the artist known as Republican Hair says of the song. "That kind of significance deserves a song. To the surprise of Republican Hair, country's sweet weirdo, Charlie Worsham, has recorded the song and swears it's going to be a part of his next record. And so it goes."

Like what you see and hear? I bet you do. Republican Hair's debut EP, I Don't Care, is available via iTunes. A full-length, titled High and Tight, is also forthcoming.
