Lyrics
I USED TO WANNA BE A COWBOY
A SHADOW IN A SUNSET
THATʼS WHY I STARTED SMOKINʼ CIGARETTES
I USED TO WANNA BE A COWBOY
I USED TO WANNA BE ELVIS
DRIVE A PINK CADILLAC CAR
THATʼS WHY I LEARNED TO PLAY THE GUITAR
I USED TO WANNA BE ELVIS
THEREʼS A LOT OF THINGS I USED TO WANNA DO ʼTIL I MET YOU
NOW I WANNA BE HONEST
NOW I WANNA BE BETTER
NOW I WANNA BE THE ME I SHOULD'VE BEEN
WHEN WE WERE TOGETHER
I WANNA BE AT LEAST
ALMOST CLOSE TO WORTH YOUR LOVE
I WANNA BE WHO
YOU THOUGHT I WAS
I USED TO WANNA JOIN THE CIRCUS
HANG AROUND WITH THE FREAK SHOW
WISH I'D LEARNED TO WALK A TIGHT ROPE
I USED TO WANNA JOIN THE CIRCUS
USED TO WANNA STAY EIGHTEEN
I USED TO WANNA AN AIRSTREAM
WITH A LAWN CHAIR TUMBLEWEED VIEW
NOW I JUST WANT YOU
AND I WANNA BE HONEST
NOW I WANNA BE BETTER
I WANNA BE THE ME I SHOULDʼVE BEEN
WHEN WE WERE TOGETHER
I WANNA BE AT LEAST
ALMOST CLOSE TO WORTH YOUR LOVE
I WANNA BE WHO
YOU THOUGHT I WAS
THEREʼS A LOT OF THINGS I USED TO WANNA BE
TIL YOU STOPPED LOVINʼ ME
NOW I WANNA BE STEADY
I WANNA BE FOREVER
NOW I WANNA BE THE ME I COULDʼVE BEEN
WHEN WE WERE TOGETHER
I WANNA BE AT LEAST
ALMOST CLOSE TO WORTH YOUR LOVE
I WANNA BE WHO
YOU THOUGHT I WAS
YEAH I WANNA BE WHO
YOU THOUGHT I WAS
Among the many new releases to be excited about in 2020, Brandy Clark’s Your Life Is a Record may be one of the most anticipated. It’ll be the stellar country songsmith's first album since 2016’s outstanding Big Day in a Small Town, and if our first taste of it is anything to go on, it’ll be a strong contender for year-end lists.
Above, check out the lyric video for “Who You Thought I Was,” an unassuming tune offering profound thoughts about how priorities change as we age. It’s a simple story, in which the narrator discusses the things she wanted out of life as a young person: “I used to wanna be a cowboy / A shadow in a sunset / That’s why I started smokin’ cigarettes.” But as the gentle but insistent rhythm pushes the story along, life looks different after the end of a relationship, with Clark's steady cadence sliding into a brief rush of syllables in the refrain: “Now I wanna be the me I should’ve been / When we were together / I wanna be at least / Almost close to worth your love / I wanna be who you thought I was.”
The album is out March 6. Check in with your favorite record store or Clark’s website for preorder information. Her tour will also stop in at 3rd and Lindsley on Sunday, March 29. You’ll be able to hear it live on Lightning 100, but you’ll want to be there in person — advance tickets are $25 and they’ll be on sale right here at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
